TALL SPRING ARRIVAL AT LION COUNTRY SAFARI

West Palm Beach, FL – On March 21, 2006, many guests at Lion Country Safari were fortunate to witness a tall baby arrival. At 1:40pm, a 110-pound, 70-inch female giraffe calf was born in the Hwange National Park area of the drive through preserve at Lion Country Safari.

The calf, named Kikora, meaning “joy” in Swahili, was the seventh born to her mother, Renee. Onlookers cheered as Kikora got on her feet after 40 minutes of practice.

Female giraffe reproduce year round beginning at about 4 years of age. Their conception peak is usually during the rainy season and their gestation lasts approximately 15 months. Life expectancy of a giraffe is 25 years.

This healthy new addition will join nearly 1,000 resident animals at Lion Country Safari, America’s first cageless zoo. Kikora is segregated from the herd to allow bonding time with her mother in the maternity pen, but, she and mom are visible in the drive-through preserve (section 7, Hwange National Park) or from the giraffe feeding exhibit at Lion Country Safari.
