TAKE A WILD RIDE AT THE MARYLAND ZOO IN BALTIMORE
- Zoo’s new carousel now taking guests for a spin -
BALTIMORE - Visitors to The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore have a difficult decision to make these days: which animal to ride on the new carousel?
The carousel began going round and round at the end of last month. There are 30 different animal figures that riders can choose from, including a penguin, an eagle, giraffes, a camel, zebras, lions, gorillas, cheetahs, horses, and rhinos. There are also two chariots -- one of them accessible for guests in wheelchairs.
The newest addition to the Zoo plays old-fashioned carousel music and also features 250 lights. It was built specifically for The Maryland Zoo by Chance Morgan, Inc., based in Wichita, Kansas. Each spin on the carousel lasts two and a-half minutes and costs two dollars. Kids under two ride for free.
So far there has been a steady stream of carousel riders, with the Zoo’s younger guests in particular going from animal to animal as they try to decide which one they want to ride. Parents can stand next to the carousel before the ride begins so they take photos of their children.
The new carousel is expected to be just as popular, if not more so, than the Zoo’s old one. That was more than 40 years old, and parts of it will be going on display near the new carousel. In addition, the Zoo is auctioning off the old carousel’s animal figures to raise funds. Carousel fans can also “adopt” one of the animals on the new carousel.
